Canuck Place Children’s Hospice provides complex pediatric palliative care for more than 830 children with life-threatening illnesses and their families, across BC and the Yukon.
Canuck Place nurses and physicians offer specialized care through outpatient community care. This ensures that families across the entire province have access to Canuck Place care when and where they need it the most. This includes telephone and video conferencing, 24-hour clinical care line, and co-ordinated care planning with local clinical teams in a family’s home community.
Through cherished memories, shared experiences, and sacred mementos, the Canuck Place recreational therapy program empowers children and families to live a full life with the time they have left together.
Music therapy at Canuck Place serves many purposes, from memory making, to expressive therapy, to creating an accessible way for children and families to have fun and connect. It is an important part of the care provided at Canuck Place, allowing both children and families to express emotions, connect with others, communicate nonverbally, and manage distressing symptoms in a safe, creative place.
Memory making is an invaluable service offered by Canuck Place recreation therapists. Hand and foot sculptures, finger print necklaces, hair locks, and photos are created during that crucial time when a child is nearing the end of life. These mementos capture the unending love a family has for their child, and become sacred objects for bereaved families – tangible memories of a life lived.
The Canuck Place medical respite program allows children the opportunity to receive in-hospice clinical care for complex illnesses, pain and symptom management, recreation therapy and counselling, while their families receive much-needed rest, renewal, and support.
Canuck Place counsellors walk alongside families, offering presence and providing them a safe space to navigate their complex journey of grief. Counsellors care for the whole family addressing the emotional, spiritual, and psychosocial needs of parents, siblings, and grandparents.
At Canuck Place, we can’t add days to the life of a child, but we can add life to their days. With you, for over 28 years, Canuck Place has been providing exceptional complex medical care, while helping children and families embrace living a full life.

About Canuck Place Children’s Hospice: Canuck Place Children’s Hospice is British Columbia and the Yukon’s pediatric palliative care provider. Over 830 children living with life-threatening illnesses and families from five provincial health regions receive Canuck Place inpatient and community care (in home/in hospital). Canuck Place operates 13 patient beds and 8 family suites through two hospices in Vancouver and Abbotsford. Services include medical respite and family support, pain and symptom management, provincial 24-hour clinical care line, music and recreation therapy, education and art, grief, loss, and bereavement counselling, as well as end-of-life care.
